The Weed Report
The Weed has been surprised to hear this game described in some quarters as lacklustre. Maybe it was just me who was wound up, but the first half I thought was played with an intensity level bordering on the maniacal. There were 34 tackles in the first quarter alone!
If you don't get to see very much of Fremantle in Melbourne, try prime-time in Brisbane. This was the first chance I've had to have a really good look what many regard as one of the most talented lists in the comp. I wasn't disappointed. We are going to hear names like Schammer, Polak, Sandilands, Woods and co. for years to come, and there were indeed shades of a young Nathan Buckley about the much-hyped Matthew Pavlich.
Fremantle started fast and hard, with none of the sense of jadedness with which North played last week. But whereas Collingwood soaked up the pressure of the occasion like a sponge, the opposition began to wilt by mid-way through the second quarter. Their endeavour didn't flag, but their frustration levels rose along with their error count.
In the end, I rated this as our best win of the year to date, including our last gasp victory over Adelaide. It was, again, a very even performance, but it was a victory won decisively in the midfield and defence.
Some pundits thought Freo's midfield ran a little deeper than ours, but they left out some crucial names. They didn't count Matthew Lokan, who absolutely demolished Paul Hasleby. They forgot about Brodie Holland, who restricted Peter Bell to 20 touches and reminded us of his deadly kicking for goal.
And they left out Benny Johnson, a back pocket who consistently notches 15-20 possessions a game. He kicked the goal of the match yesterday.
Finally, yet again, they underrated Scott Burns. When will this guy be recognised for what he is - one of the top 20 players in the league? If he's not an All-Australian this year then you've gotta wonder what the criteria is for making it.
Down in defence, Prestigiacomo was practicing his ballet steps. Maybe it was the loss of Clement, but I don't recall seeing Presti dancing around too many forwards previously, and he played the best attacking game of his career. Cloke is back to last year's form and is THE best spoiler in the league. His kicking is still a worry but he reminds me of a baby Glenn Archer. He may just win a Norm Smith to prove it one day. And Rhyce Shaw - well, he only played a half but with his first touch he showed what we've been missing: dash, daring and flair with a capital F. He was brilliant and did his jumper proud.
In the other half of the ground, Chris Tarrant was again marvellous. This time he played a true CHF role, controlling the forward line. He is one of the main reasons the midfielders kicked so many goals. His defensive work to keep the ball locked in, particularly in the first half, was inspiring and if not for some very tame umpiring he could have kicked at least two more goals.
Perhaps more important, he carried himself with a presence and intensity I haven't seen before. He has, in short, grown into himself. It's as if, finally, he is comfortable with, rather than intimidated by how good he is.
Another in this category is Josh Fraser, who is becoming almost scarily good. That huge smile on kicking his third goal said it all - he now knows he can mix it with any of the big men in the league. His confidence is sky high and his marking has improved out of sight.
I could talk more about Richard Cole, who again made some clangers but had the temperament to get better as he went on. I could wax lyrical about Shane O'Bree who is finding he can do up forward what Holland can do down back. I could praise Didak for sticking to his guns and continuing to contribute goals; I sense his confidence returning.
But I'll save the last words for Nathan Buckley. Has he ever played better than in the past three weeks - or better than this year? Midway through the season we were rating Tarrant a serious Brownlow threat. He still is, he will certainly poll well, but Buckley may just have gone past him. He could easily have six BOG's to this point. More in a separate thread...
Last week I wrote I have a very good feeling about the rest of the year. I'll go beyond that. If we continue to play with that intensity, if the side continues to gel and the young players continue their climb, I now seriously believe we can win it this year. We are beginning to peak and we have arguably more to play for than anyone.

Excellent report from The Weed.
There's no way this game was "lacklustre". It was intense high pressure football.
Freo is a team absolutely brimming with talent ... and they did not play badly. They simply couldn't match Collingwood's intensity on the day.
Not sure about going all the way. We'd have to maintain that intensity for 11 more weeks to have any hope. And that's a very big ask.

4 short weeks ago, a couple of ppl were telling us that Collingwood were""WEAK AS PISS"",And giving out lists of the 5 worst players. Are they now still WAP or shit hot, or are you small group who continually see only negatives in a fine group of young men "fine weather fliers"?
Collingwood players give their all week after week, but some weeks aren't as good as others. For all clubs, the Collingwood game is their game of the year and they play accordingly. We flogged freo and nth melbourne and the bulldogs and everyone at one stage or another stood up and were counted.Injury, personal issues or a better opponent on the day may cause a player to not perform at his best and that is no reason to be labelled WAP.
We will flog Bitchmond next week but if we don't will the knockers be back?If you didn't like the way we thrashed freo then you must be watching the wrong game.

Great win by the Pies. freo have been in good form and would have been very keen to spoil the week for us, and to prove to themselves that they can match it with the one of the "big boys" on the 'G'. From that perspective it makes our win even better.
As others have said, what the bloody hell are the umps looking at when the ball is coming into our forward line and Taz is one out with the opposition. Thought they were starting to crack down on this.
The back line was great, was worried that Jimmy would be a big hole to fill, but fill it they did. Two weeks in a row Benny J kicks a great goal, knew we'd win when he kicked that one in the third.
Constant hard and intense football, amazing how good they look when they look like they mean business. Great effort by the whole team. Two weeks in a row when they never looked like losing.

theres a lot to like abt the win.. shaw to tarrant is becomin the new lica 2 bucks..obreees evasive skills are great! holland and lokans tagging job..cole who got 19 possessions while keepin his opponent to 5 and goalless.. bucks & burns sensational!.. fraser and johnson in fine form.. bring on a richmond thrashing!

Here's my thoughts on the game.
The Umpires
Thought the frees were even, where were Tarrant's? The poor guy was molest the whole game without so much of a free kick. He could of had atleast 4 goals if the umpire was awake. And Burns almost got his head ripped off, I think it was near the end of the first, atleast Freo got some against, but they got many soft free's.
Josh Fraser
What can I say? Very good game, showed why he was a Number. 1 Draft pick for us, and looks like he is starting to come into his own as a ruckman. It took awhile, but he is starting to show some good things.
Shane Woewodin
Starting to show some form, I think he's finally settling in at Collingwood, I am starting to see some of the play he played at Melbourne. With him and Buckley firing Collingwood will have a good drive out of the centre.
Scotty Burns
Does this guy ever play a bad game? Another good game by Burns, I really can't say anything that hasn't been said before.
Jason Cloke
Back to playing well, took some good marks, and played very well, starting back to how he was going before the "report" and suspenion.
Brodie Holland
Looks like he is starting to enjoy his new role, played okay, as much of the team did.
Ben Johnson
Starting to turn into a good footballer, still needs a little work, but he is getting there.
Paul Licuria, Rhyce Shaw, Wakelin, etc.
Pretty good game by most of the team, really good team effort, the score didn't do Fremantle justice, they were a strong hard side, just that Collingwood was better, good game by Shaw, good to see him back, and to see him lead the guys off after the game.

Well done to the Fremantle Dockers for their tribute to Bobby Rose, it was good to see them pay respect to him. So well done to them, and well done to the Dockers for a good game, we were better, but they were good aswell.

Ahhh ALF, you don't have to worry about the enemies you ahve made mate....I for one have to apologise fot eh way i over reacted to your posts....but I do know you are Collingwood mate and because of that you are welocme anywhere....just liek fighting with your brother or sister mate...quick to forgive, quick to forget.....in saying all that if I ever see you I will smack your head in....lol...IT IS A JOKE.......
Was a great win by the boys and since the break have certainly turned the corner, they have definatley put the rest of the competition on notice, and I like Alf look forward to seeni ghow they respond going in to the next three as favourites...hopefully with the same gusto and good football that they displayed on Saturday..this is definately no time to be resting on our form of the last 3 weeks...really need to stamp it now...and i am confident that they have it in them.

this may be a little late but did anyone else see the statistics of the game in the sunday sun? It listed molloy with 4 possessions and 5 clangers, and he tallied a total of -13 points (some weird point system they give to rate players performances, for the record buckley had the most with 180 something). Is it possible to register 5 clangers when youve only had the ball 4 times?
