How the papers see it.

Post by Dale61 »

Steven Milne's report in this weeks local paper, The Mail.

Williamstown's skyscraper forwards Mark Richardson, Ben Kinnear and Marcus Baldwin continue to make life hell for their opponents.

In any weather.

They kept the goal umpires on their toes by kicking 10 between them as the Seagulls outplayed the struggling Coburg Tigers in the wind and rain at Point Gellibrand Oval last Sunday.

The blue and golds are celebrating six successive wins for the first time in more than a decade.

Collingwood 141-game player Richardson is enjoying some hot form since returning from a dislocated elbow three weeks ago.

He has kicked five goals in his past two games.

Importantly, Richardson is delighted to be strutting his stuff for Williamstown as he sets his sights on a possible return for the Magpies in the coming weeks.

"I'm just trying my best at this level," he said on radio station Stereo 974FM after the game.

"The boys are really working in well together."

Club general manager Brendan Curry said Richardson had become a real favourite among the supporters.

Richardson was cheered on by his father Wayne, who was a star ruck-rover for Collingwood on the late 1960's and '70's.

Coach Brad Gotch has just about got the perfect mix in attack.

The talls are working well with 'crumbers' like Josh Mahoney, Sam Cranage, Rupert Betheras and Craig Smoker.

The Seagulls blew the game apart in the third quarter, slamming on 7.4 to 2.0, as midfielders Heath Scotland and Adrian Fletcher got their hands on plenty of footy.

Young gun utility Luke Shackleton is starting to hot up after missing most of the preseason with a dodgy knee.

Curry insists the reigning U18 TAC Cup Morrish medallist is destined for greater things.

"He's improving every week," he said.

"Hopefully, he gets an opportunity upstairs (with the Magpies) in the next month."

Collingwood used their second pick (29th overall) to sign Shackleton from the Tassie Mariners in last year's AFL national draft.

Co-captain and full-back Troy West was all smiles after the final siren.

It was a double celebration for 'Westy', who qualified for VFL life membership - courtesy of 173 games for the Seasgulls and two representative games for the VFL.

Assistant coach Anthony Eames is adamant the all-conquering side has the capacity to improve.

"We haven't done anything too outstanding as far as four quarters is concerned," he said on Stereo 974FM.

Eames agreed depth of the club's squad is especially rich - evidenced by the fact that the stars of the reserves' phenomenal 50-goal plus win over Springvale in the previous round didn't receive a 'call-up' last weekend.

"It was a case of 'Whose place were they going to take?'

"They need to play well every week to keep their names at the top of the list."

Williamstown play fourth-placed Sandringham in what promises to be a humdinger at Trevor Barker Oval in the 10th round this Sunday - seniors at 2pm and reserves at 11.20am.
