^ Yes and no.
When Wood is back at VFL level, obviously he has to take #1 ruck to stay in match fitness, but it renders us too top heavy, because Witts has to play to develop, and Ceglar is next cap off the rank if Wood gets injured.
On the other hand, Ceglar is quite servicable when resting up forward, as is Witts. Both offer more around the ground than Wood, but Wood seems to be building up some good form in that regard.
The trick is to offset the extra talls with extra runners by taking advantage of the extended interchange bench that VFL level gives you.
Something that we don't always do...

Just wondering why they would choose not to play the extra? Is it a matter of getting extra endurance into the young legs?
Because you'd think the decison not to have the xtra may of cose us in terms of results

^ He he, yeah.
I do come across as a bit obsessed with it, don't I?
You could argue that is the reason for playing 22 when a 23rd is available, because staying out on the ground longer forces the young kids on the team to build up their endurance in order to run out games. Something that they will need when they play at AFL level, with the higher intensity and the fewer rotations available.
But if you have publicly stated that you want the VFL team playing in September, as Tarks has stated,, but play more ruckmen than is wise (out of necessity), then you leave yourself too top heavy. The best way to offset this is, of course, to take advantage of the extra interchange rotations available to play extra running players.
It IS a development side, that is true, but there are advantages to having the twos keep on winning and playing in September at the same time as the senior side...

Winning culture is good culture.
It was stated at the start of the season that the VFL side would focus on winning games. This was a point of difference between Rowdy and Mick.
Anyone drafted to AFL can play the game. But not every player drafted to AFL knows how to win. That is something you learn through experience and could even be genetic or at least something instilled in a child before the age of 7. Most kids are pretty competitive, thats just human, but the instinct to win when the chips are down is something very unique.
Deka drafted the less fancied Pendlebury, Thomas, Sidebottom and Beams on the premise that they not only won junior premierships, but starred on the big day. It is no surprise that they starred on the biggest of days when it really mattered.
Rowdy understood this because he was one of four legends of our club that went through the same process. Kieth Burns' 1986 U19 premiership team yielded Rowdy, Monkhorst, McGuane and Crosisca. Four players that would be instrumental in the 1990 AFL primiership.
While we are happy that the VFL continues to produce ready made AFL players that hit the ground running, we need to be mindful that finals footy is very different and it is the players with that killer winning instinct that rise to the top on the big occassion.
While it is not the be-all and end-all and the AFL team can still win a premiership regardless of what the VFL team is doing, we must always be looking for the little advantage, even if it is just 1%. The VFL team needs to start winning games.

When Collingwood recruited players for the VFL squad this year they advised them that we wanted the VFL team to make the finals due to having no fit players for last years GF. The VFL team will not make finals unless there is a dramatic call. It won't happen as we rarely have a balanced team due to injuries. Playing so many talls ala Ruckman is a worry so it's catch 22, if they don't play them they lose fitness.
I am getting annoyed that when the club does it's reviews the AFL players get praised for 9 pathetic possesions yet a VFL player with 26 barely gets a mention. A few AFL listed players we have currently should not be getting a game and should not get paid if they don't play.
Lockyer is on a hiding to no where and whilst I am no major fan I am happy that Buckley is behind him all the way and players have jumped up to AFL to fill the void so I congratulate Lockyer for his efforts.

We Treat the VFL as almost Practise where the Other VFL Teams take it as a Competion and They want to win. I don't see much from that from collingwood

No as many of these guys won't play seniors. The VFL players are solid players, not pretenders.neil wrote:Could all the senior injuries mean the VFL side lacks its best players?
Not to mention a few VFL level players injured.
The problem is we have a bull*hit reserves competition. We are trying to go back to what we had in a half farted measure. All teams should have a reserves sqaud that plays before the seniors. Then have the VFL, what we are doing now will send non aligned or weaker clubs broke.

They are borderline Dave. Their effort is without question and has been great, but all three lack sustained impact on a game. The only AFL player to have a real impact on a game so far this year was when Jamie Elliott came back from injury against Box Hill with his 4 goals.Dave The Man wrote:Except for Paine,Witts and Ceglar I reckon they aredie4pies wrote:^^ Everything Culprit wrote and just want to highlight the massive inequity in the reporting of VFL listed players.
It is the AFL players letting the team down at the moment.
Preston win: Best: Boland (6 goals), Ferraro, K Pendlebury and Hellier. N Brown was named BOG which I question. Top six maybe, but not BOG.
Port win: Riddle, Wallace and Pendlbury in the best. Ferraro unlucky not to get a mention. Marley Williams racked up 27 possessions but of his 21 kicks only 13 were effective. Ricky Ferraro had 17 kicks and 15 were effective.
It is so frustrating that VFL boys are proping up the AFL boys. It is almost as though the AFL players are making up the numbers. Perhaps it is a preservation thing. With the number of players going down it is just a matter of time before a place in the AFL team opens up and you want to be fit to get the call. For the VFL boys it is a case of bust a nut to get noticed for the 2012 draft, which explains them playing out of their skins.
