Round 20 - Collingwood v Bendigo at Victoria Park
1:00pm this Saturday at the Park.
Collingwood: 11th (4 wins, 12 losses, 3 byes, 77.29%)
Bendigo: 7th (8 wins, 9 losses, 3 byes, 103.85%)
Last time these two sides met:
Round 4 at Windy Hill
Bendigo 25.22.172
Collingwood 13.14.92
Well, the mathematical chance has now been snuffed out, so it's all about pride now for the remaining two games this season. And since Bendigo are effectively a duplicate of Essendon in nearly every way, beating the Bombers at Victoria Park is very much a matter of pride.
Selections. Sharrod Wellingham and Chris Dawes are both listed on the club injury list as "test", and if previous experience is anything to go by, they will be straight back into the senior 22 to take on St. Kilda should they be cleared to play, as well as Harry O'Brien.
So who makes way for them? Cameron Wood, Luke Rounds, Alex Fasolo, Simon Buckley and Tyson Goldsack are the likely suspects from the trashing the Magpies handed to Port Adelaide last Saturday night. And what about Brent Maccaffer? He was held over as an emergency for the match at Football Park, so he will almost certainly see some action, at either AFL or VFL level, this week.
And then there is the question of debutants at this late stage of the season. Tom Young and Josh Thomas both continue to impress, but they are running out of time to score their first senior games in 2011, as the VFL season peters out for Collingwood and the AFL finals approach. Mick Malthouse's target of approximately 30 players to play senior football this season has been met, so unless both Tom and Josh put in a blinder on Saturday, my feeling is that they will both see out this year still waiting to make their AFL debut, should they not be named in the senior side this week.
Tom Sundberg's absence last week was sorely felt, so here's hoping he will return on Saturday. John Ceglar took a knock to the head after being pushed into a goal post and was assisted from the field, so it's not clear whether he will line up on Saturday. Hope is alright.
As I said, nothing but pride to play for now. Beating Essendon Reserves on our hallowed turf will serve as a nice desert to the ravenous feasting our boys will undertake on Friday night.
