Round 18 - Collingwood v Frankston at Victoria Park
2:00pm this Saturday at the old girl.
No TV or radio broadcast.
Collingwood: 11th place (3 wins, 11 losses, 3 byes, 74.82%)
Frankston: 13th place (1 win, 12 losses, 4 byes, 53.32%)
Last time these two sides met:
Round 1 at Frankston Park
Frankston 7.6.48
Collingwood 18.14.122
I know that I've said it before in games that we looked favourites to take out (eg: Coburg), but, surely, I can say it this time: we SHOULD win this game!
Moving on to selections, now. The two or three big ones, as far as Collingwood supporters are concerned, will be whether Cameron Wood comes back to the VFL to make way for Darren Jolly, whether or not Alan Didak bypasses the VFL and slots straight back into the seniors (as well as who will make way for him), and whether Dayne Beams will be right to play this week as he recovers from a fractured foot.
Among our fringe players currently seeing AFL action, Simon Buckley, John McCarthy, Luke Rounds and Alex Fasolo are all possibilities to return to VFL level to open up a spot for Didak. Lachlan Keefe would normally be in that category too, but until Chris Dawes is back on deck, his place in the seniors is safe for now.
Among our up-and-comers, Tom Young, Josh Thomas and Ben Sinclair have all been hinted at by Mick Malthouse to make a senior debut before the finals this year, so any one of them might get the call-up this week. From our VFL list, Tom Sundberg should be right to return after missing the last game in Wangaratta.
And just for Dave The Man, it's possible that Jarrod Witts will make his (official) debut in the Collingwood colours this week, with Micheal Hartley likely to join him after debuting against Williamstown in Round 16.
As with all VFL games played the day before a senior game, at least one player named in the emergencies will be held over for the game against Essendon as a precaution. Still, it is Frankston that we are playing, so we should be alright on that front.
A win would, in all likelihood, see us leapfrog Geelong and get us within striking distance of Sandringham and Box Hill. As amazing as it sounds, there still is a small, mathematical chance of us reaching the finals, but we have to win every game from here in, pump the sides that we do play by hefty margins, and hope that Sandy and Box Hill drop enough games.
Unrealistic? Probably. But it's worth a shot. A boost to our woeful percentage with a huge win this Saturday would be a big start.
