I'd have to agree the umps give us a bad run but this is round 4, not the GF. I'm still a little emotional after watching it too but try to take a step back and view the result. We lost by 2 goals to brisbane in brisbane. Could we have won it....I believe so but to come within 2 goals up there after limited preparation is not all bad.
It hurts us that we were in with a sniff to win and again just didn't make it. Facts are that psychologists can say what they like, travel IS a factor and the results are there to prove it. MM won't give away everything in round 4. I believe we will be better for it.
Unfortunately its a bitter pill to swallow at the moment but travel factor plus a LOUD crowd at the G is worth more than 2 goals if you ask me. Leigh Matthews believes its worth 4-5 goals to them up there.
The only down side I can see (apart from actually losing the 4 points) is that we had our chances, umpires or not, and we didn't finish off as well as they did. 26 shots to 25 in our favour and we lost. That polish will come during the season. Relax I say, applaud the boys for putting up a good effort and wait for next time....because there is a next time - on our soil.

mmm
yea actually ur right i think with or without umpires, had we kicked even only reasonably straight we would have won by 3-4 so i mean it wasnt that bad...its just they tried so hard and the umpires practically swung the momentum single handedly in the third quarter... neways we will kill em in melbourne so im ready for round 19

If Lynch gets away with what he did to Cloke my god do we have some problems in this game! Lynch is really starting to get on my nervous, like the grand final last year wasn't bad enough! The AFL criticise the rugby league yet I'm sure they wouldn't tolerate such a reckless tackle or whatever you wish to call it! We shall wait and see!
The boys played well and could have easily won the game had it not been for poor shots at goal! Nevermind I am over the pain and anger now and I'm sure we will flog them next time round!
GO PIES!

We played well in the second half, however, we missed too many shots and thats what cost us. I was telling my brothers from the start of the game, 'if we miss easy shots, it wll cost us at the end of the game', and thats exactly what happened. Brisbane got back into it and it was over from there.
We know we can beat this team, we have shown that three times now. We would have to be the best performing team against Brisbane in recent memory and we are on the right road.
The umpires didn't cost us the game but the umpiring was atrocious last night. There were so many holding the ball decisions that they didn't call against Brisbane and then they pinged Bucks in front of the Lions goal. Typical bloody umpire. Lynch should be reported for what he did, it wasn't necessary and should be classified as rough play.
Fraser made a few costly mistakes the first half but he improved a little in the second. Didak missed too many shots but did well. Rocca played fantastic in the first half but faded out in the second when we were stuggling to get the ball past centre half forward.
Tarrant did well but dropped a few after hurting his fingers when the ball bounced off the post from Freeborne's poster. Well done Taz, keep on improving mate, you are doing well.
Buckley and Woewodin were good in the middle, but the rest of the midfield seemed to lose the plot in the second half, or maybe it was just because Brisbane had a far too many people running forward, without our players being accountable.
Let's put this into perspective. We played at the Gabba for the first time in three years and only lost by 14 points. We dominated the first half but fell away in the second half. If we play four quarters against Brisbane we will beat them. We have the team to beat them, and I think we will in the return game at the m MCG. Well done to Brisbane, and better luck next time Pies.
BTW, I have lost total respect for Lynch. I used to respect him as a player but he is a different player these days.

You actually respected Lynch ?? He was a dog in last years grand final and is generally a dog in most games he plays at the gabba. I have never respected Lynch and i never will.Joel wrote:We played well in the second half, however, we missed too many shots and thats what cost us. Big deal if Lynch gets reported. We wont see the benefits of his suspension. Lynch should have been punished at the scene of the crime. Anyway chances are he will need another rest so a suspension wont make any difference.
Lynch is a desperate old footballer who has to resort to gutter tactics to get a kick.
I thought you are being a bit tough on Freeborn, Obree and Burns who i thought were solid contributors in the midfield. Freeborn won quite a few centre clearances and is a bit under rated as a player.
Didak was a bit unlucky having two posters and another of his snapshots was on his right foot!!
Hopefully Essendon feel the full brunt of Collingwood on the rebound and get destroyed.

Well i don't agree with the heading of this...I don't believe we went cold...but yeah, i agree with Mick that it was a disappointing game. I'm still proud of the boys though and nothing will ever take away from that.
Lynch should be reported, he's a dirty player but what do you expect from a drug cheat?
I've been saying for years....they report the players, they can do video reports now....why can't we have some form of report for the umpires? or are they above the rules?

Pies gone cold
By MICHAEL GLEESON in Brisbane

MICK Malthouse condemned last night's 14-point loss to Brisbane as one of the most disappointing games he had been involved in.
And the Magpies coach said if Collingwood didn't get better it would be condemned to be a "good, unlucky side".
"We have a lot to learn. That was one of the most disappointing games I have been in for a number of years," he said after the Pies fell apart in the middle of the game before recovering some ground in the dying minutes.
"We went off the rails, we virtually got murdered mid-way through the second quarter to the end of the third quarter.
"As a consequence we didn't control the ball and they did. We didn't do anywhere near the things that we practice and speak about."
He attacked the players' lack of discipline and waste in front of goal for the loss of control of a match firmly within their grasp early on.
"Our discipline for this game was very ordinary. It's pretty hard to explain that away. The structures and the methods which we are taught was never adhered to, rarely adhered to.
"So we have something to build on if we get beaten by a very good side.
"If we get carried away with things we have done well out of this game then we will always be a good, unlucky side and I have got no interest in coaching an unlucky side.
"And I have no interest, not one little bit of interest, in being associated with a side that won't get better.
"We have some work to do and we can be better but our discipline was woeful. You just don't miss goals when you are having shots from that angle when you should be putting them through.
"It's called bad luck or 'gee, isn't it stiff when you hit the post'. It isn't bad luck - it's simply a point."

Point taken, however, we were absolutely smashed in the middle from near the end of the second quarter until near the end of the fourth quarter. What does that mean? It must mean something. Woewodin and Buckley were in our best players. They did good things at times but went missing at others. I'm not having a go at the players, just summing up what happened.JLC wrote:Joel wrote:

???
i think freeborn and burns weren't anything special just solid however obree in conjunction with bucks and woey consistently won every contested ball up until the frustratingly umpired second half....and once the lions were on a roll and the freekicks simply pushing them faster it was only a matter of time till the game was over
having said that our boys were great wherever the umpires shut their mouths and let the game be played and the revival in the dying minutes was heart stirring... good game boys u almost beat a team of 25

All the regular Magpie baggers must be on holidays you guys have been pretty generous so far.
I agree with Mick Malthouse, the second half of the game we went missing and if we get carried away with the positives from this game, we will not improve.
I can see the positives myself - it was a great first half and we came pretty close (considering their home ground advantage.)
Tazza was good until he hurt his hand - apparently his thumb - I hope it's not too serious.
Bucks was sensational as always with 33 possessions although he doesn't get recognition for it because it happens every week so too Licuria.
On the down side, we had a lousy second half and missed goals that should have been kicked throughout the game.
Leon and Josh had shockers and I thought Presti and Clokey seemed a bit out of touch.
Didak gave away a stupid free kick which cost us a goal - he will have to learn to ignore the taunts.
The final score flattered us. I think we only scored in time on of the last quarter because Brisbane knew they had it won and took their foot off the pedal.
I was hoping for a good contest whether or not we won.
We only got that for 2 quarters.

Freeborn got quite a few centre clearances for us and did quite well. I dont expect Freeborn to dominate a game but what i do expect is a contribution and i think he provided that.
First game back for Presti and maybe he was a little rusty but i think he can be forgiven.
Fraser did make some costly fumbles and hopefully he can learn from this. Leon needs to bounce back next week and regain confidence. He has to develop consistency and get better at doing the basic things.
I thought we became very stagnant in the latter half of the game. Whereas in the first half we were getting great run through the middle of the ground.
Hopefully the team will learn from this and bounce back in the upcoming weeks.
I guess Mick Malthouse has always been of the philosophy thats its not the end result that matters but its the processes that matter in the long run. Judging by his post match comments the team didnt stick to these.

MM's focus is for the players...he doesn't want them to think that last nights performance was good enough. Deep down I'd say he's quite happy with the result. We showed enough last night to say we have every chance of belting them in melbourne. As I've said previously, you can say what you like but travel is a factor and teams travelling do fade in the second half.
There were areas last night that we didn't perform well in but this will be worked on. MM has made statements about our performance publicly but underneath I don't think he'd be too upset. I still say 14 points is not too bad an effort given the circumstances....you may say the score flatters us but scores are scores. If you want to look at it from the other angle, they were lucky to be in the game at half time - even Leigh Matthews agrees on that.
