Round 15 - Collingwood vs Port Melbourne at Victoria Park
2:00pm this Saturday at the old dame.
No TV or radio coverage.
Collingwood: 10th place on the ladder (3 wins, 9 losses, 2 byes)
Port Melbourne: 1st place on the ladder (11 wins, 0 losses, 3 byes)
Statistically speaking, this week is our last chance to start winning enough games to make it to the finals. Realistically speaking, our chances of September action are gone. To steal the final place in the eight, we have to sweep all of our remaining six games, with two byes still to be had. Steep order, especially since Port are unbeaten and are looking in great form...
Looking at personnel, there shouldn't be too much change from the side that was narrowly pipped by Box Hill. Cameron Wood should play, after missing last Saturday's match. Was it a niggle, or just a case of being held-over as backup for Jolly against Hawthorn? Ben Johnson did his chances of a re-call to face North Melbourne no harm with his performance on Saturday. Will he be promoted back the seniors this week or will the club give him one more week in the VFL to get him fully fit for our back-to-back finals campaign.
Macaffer too is in the same category, although having been out of senior football for a longer period of time, I get the feeling that he is about 1 to 2 weeks away from a senior re-call.
Potential returns from the seniors to the VFL side this week include Simon Buckley, Alex Fasolo and Luke Rounds, any of whom could make way for Johnson, Goldsack and maybe Macaffer to come back into the AFL side. Tom Young, who was named as an emergency but held over for the Hawthorn match, will likely either return to the VFL or play on Sunday against the Roos (in Tommy's case, it would be his AFL debut).
Lachlan Keefe is another possibility for a senior debut or emergency hold-over. Cameron Wood could even be re-called to help cover the 2nd tall forward role left open by Chris Dawes becoming injured. John McCarthy is another option for the senior side too. Our depth provides so many options...
Speaking of Keefe, it was noted that both Lachlan and Josh Thomas seemed to injure themselves against Box Hill on Saturday. Since they are not on the injury list on the club website, I'm assuming that they're okay. Josh and Ben Sinclair will be both better for the run, and they should continue to improve this Saturday.
The pragmatist in me says that it is all over, but the supporter in me keeps holding the faith that we can eek out an upset and stay in the race. Can it be done? Here's hoping for a good game, anyways.
